How Long Does Ore Take to Smelt in Rust?

Compare furnace time, wood demand, and expected charcoal for metal, sulfur, and high quality metal ore.

Patch 2026.07 · Updated 2026-07-11

Metal ore cooks more slowly than sulfur ore, while high quality metal ore takes longer again. Furnace speed, input slots, and the number of ovens all affect the finish time.

Choose the correct ore

Metal ore takes 10 seconds per item at base speed, sulfur takes 5 seconds, and high quality metal ore takes 20 seconds.

Split the load

More ovens and usable input slots reduce elapsed time. The calculator assumes the stacks are divided evenly.

Plan fuel separately

Electric furnaces need no wood. Fuel-burning ovens show the wood demand and expected charcoal for the calculated run time.

Quick answers

Frequently asked questions

Does an electric furnace need wood?

No. The electric furnace uses power instead of burnable fuel.

Does sulfur ore smelt faster than metal ore?
